Doing a machine's job

This is the new labour chief

He is a joker!

One of the many jokes he spewed is that hawker centre cleaners must double the number of tables they clean (But how? He did not bother to explain. One can only assume he thought these cleaners were very lazy and not working hard enough). In return, he said they may get higher income.

You can read his old joke below. Please remeber to laugh after reading. It's only polite to do so when someone tells a joke!

Low waged workers must make quantum leap in productivity to move ahead
Channel NewAsia, 19 May 2006

To improve productivity in Singapore in the years ahead, Deputy Secretary-General of the NTUC, Lim Swee Say has said there are two ways to do so.

One is for Singapore to be cheaper and better than its competitors and the other is to make a quantum leap in the productivity of low waged workers.

But this does not mean a small percentage in productivity but a 50 to even 100 percent increase.

Mr Lim said this may translate to higher incomes for these workers too.

One key area that will help in this effort is job recreation and redesigning jobs for example of hawker centre cleaners.

Instead of supporting a small number of stalls, by doubling their support, they also double their productivity.

Mr Lim made the observations when he was speaking to members of the Singapore Productivity Association Dinner Friday night. - CNA /dt

Mr. Lim seemed to think that humans are like machines. If he wanted to double productivity, all he needed to do is to turn a knob from "medium" to "high"! That's a frightening thought, but not a surprising one.

"Human Batteries can always be made to sweat more, work harder, and forced to pay double, if not triple, the fees/ fines/ tax they are currently paying" -- that's how the Matrix Masters have always felt.

And why shouldn't they? 66.6% of Human Batteries are more than ready to comply. Even this Human Battery said in his profile: 鞠躬尽瘁,死而后已!lol

Agent Smith: Never send a human to do a machine's job.

the news article revealed how clueless and out dated the PAP mindset has become. To be cheaper and better then competitors simply means depressing the wages of workers, but not Mr Lim's wage of course. On an island increasingly over-run by 3rd world migrant workers, is this Mr Lim's meaning of "cheaper and better"? As old jobs are lost is this the way of creating new jobs? Looks like Spore is moving down the value chain instead of up. Decades of authoritarian rule is exposing how ill prepared we are for the digital age.

Not quite a political 2 cents but some thoughts about one's face reflecting one's heart. People's face change.

I remember GCT's exuberant hopeful face when he first stepped into PM role and his calls for a more open and kinder society. Over the years, for some unknown reason (maybe due to an old man who refuse to exit his office), one no longer hears/read about how/whether those early visions GCT had for Singapore were actually achieved. Look at GCT's face now.

Then I remember LSS perhaps a decade ago. Tipped to be the next high-flyer fast rising star, people falling over each other to congratulate him on his every "achievement" and new role. He had a more affable face then, now one gets a face with only a skin-deep smile (don't know if it is from the wrinkles or what). Really a resemblance, a smiling face that hides whatever underneath.

It would be interesting to observe if the newer "stars" like Vivian B and others are going to display similar "facial changes" in years to come.

Anon above, I agree with you! A person's face reflects his "heart". Maybe not so at 20 years old. But definitely at 40 and onwards. After some 20 years, those who are impatient, will "somehow" end up having a face with an impatient look. Those who are kind-hearted, well, they *look* kind-hearted! And so on...
